The ancient village of Malcesine
The town stands on a small promontory on the Veronese
side of the lake, at the foot of Monte Baldo. Collected
around the Castle and the Palazzo dei Capitani, the ancient
village with the small harbor, the small squares, the
animated alleys of shops, bars and typical restaurants, still
retain its magical charm. In Malcesine you can go sailing,
windsurfing, kitesurfing or sunbathe lying in natural creeks
or dive into the blue waters of Lake Garda.
Malcesine Castle
Located on a cliff overlooking the lake, the castle is a truly
unique wonder. It seems owes its origins to the
Longobards, but it was later destroyed by the Franks in
590. It was rebuilt by them and in 806 it hosted King
Pipino, who came to Malcesine to visit the Saints Benigno
and Caro. After the Hungarian invasions, it became part of
the Veronese bishop fiefdoms and later only in 1277 it
became the domain of Alberto della Scala. It remained
under the lineage until 1387.
Palazzo dei Capitani
Overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda, the
Palazzo dei Capitani in Malcesine, built between the 13th
and 14th centuries, is a perfect example of Venetian
Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Once the seat of the
Captains of the Lake, the palace holds centuries of history
within its frescoed halls and architectural details. From the
garden, the breathtaking view of the lake offers a unique
experience, making the Palazzo dei Capitani an
unmissable symbol of Malcesine’s beauty.
