The soldier

A Glimpse of History from the Klimt Suite Balcony

One of the few memories Rob Farrow has of his father is an old black-and-white photograph, taken in Italy in May 1945, at the end of the Second World War.
With a heart full of curiosity and nostalgia, Rob reached out to Ben Appleby, president of the Benach Association, asking if he could help uncover more about that last, rare memory of his father.

After careful research, the surprise: the photo, showing Bill Farrow, then a soldier in the U.S. 10th Mountain Division, was taken right from the balcony of what was then Villa Gruber, now the beautiful Klimt Suite of our hotel.

It is an image that carries the end of the war, the peace after conflict, and the hope of a new beginning.
That balcony, witness to memories and history, today offers a timeless view: the calm waters of the lake, the golden hills, and our historic villa.
The same place that, in 1913, inspired Gustav Klimt to paint two famous views of Malcesine.

Staying in the Klimt Suite means breathing in emotion, memory, and beauty: a place where the past tells its story and the present enchants.
